Mars, Moon, Mercury, Venus, May 14, 2021

After raining the whole day the day before, the sky just cleared up in time. The atmosphere was clear and crisp and after not being out at nights for the last two month, I was on my way. Headed to a place just a stones throw away from my home and got treated by a sight I can’t get enough from: the crescent Moon at nautical twilight. Featured by Mars, Mercury and Venus, they all lined up along the ecliptic. A great night out (despite the nighttime curfew). Enjoy!

My Favorite Images Of 2020

2020 has been  some sort of a roller coaster ride to all of us I guess. But despite Covid 19, my life this past year has been dominated by whitnessing and photographing the coolest comet in ages, traveling to France with one of my sons and of course roaming the back yards of my beloved home. Life is good, even with a lot of restrictions. So here are my twelve favorites of 2020. Enjoy and have a good one in 2021!

More Of Comet Neowise, July 13th/14th 2020

Some more impressions of comet Neowise from July 13th and 14th. Lots of clouds around and short nights, but the view is astonishing, to say the least, and it won´t be back for the next 6.800 years. Enjoy!

Crescent Moon and Venus around the Hop Fields

We got some pretty clear weather the last couple of weeks. After New Moon on the 23rd of April 2020, I was heading out every evening after that to photograph the Crescent Moon and Venus around the hop fields of my home, the Hallertau, the world largest hop planting area. What a playground to roam. Enjoy and take care!

Creating My First Photo Book

My long-awaited wish finally came true last week – creating my first photo book, using Saal-Digital (https://www.saal-digital.de/) for printing. I don´t get sponsored by this company, but making the book with their software was an easy one and the quality and service of it is superb. It is much easier than handling Blurb´s BookWright, not to speak of the integrated Blurb module in Lightroom (LR is great, but the book module is not). My first photo book is about my home, the Holledau, the largest continious hop planting area of the world, right here in Lower Bavaria, Germany. So, here is my workflow, using Lightroom and Saal Design Software:

1. Put the images you want for your book in a new folder in LR

2. Calibrate your monitor (if you haven´t done that already…)

3. Edit your the images in LR

4. Download the ICC-profile for the photo paper you want your images to be printed on

5. Install the ICC-profile into LR and use  “soft proof” in LR to adjust the images to the selected paper

6. Export the selected images to a new folder on your desktop

7. Open Saal Design Software, open the folder with your images and let the fun start…

There are heaps of tutorials on youtube, concerning soft proofing in general, and there are also some of Saal Digital itself, getting you ready for doing your first-ever photo book. Enjoy, but be aware, it might get you addicted!

Hop Field At Night

Strolling around last night to get some impressions of the current hop harvest in the Hallertau, Lower Bavaria, I came across this new built up hop plant. The poles are set up, but the cables and wires are not attached so far. That makes a great graphic silhouette against the night sky. Enjoy!

Hop Fields At Sunset

Revisiting the same place over and over again may sound a bit boring, but the possibilities it holds photographically speaking are diverse. I have spent days and nights out in the hop fields of the Hallertau, Lower Bavaria, either working there in my adolescent days or nowadays, just cruising around to see what might get my attention. No night shots this time, but the setting sun, which is only visible like that around this time of the year. Enjoy!

Back On Track

An almost 3-year long crusade of disorientation has finally came to an end. Just before X-mas 2014, I moved back to the area where I grew up, just a stones throw away from my parental home. I love traveling, but I also love being at home, doing some craft work (joiner) again and carrying for my children. I don´t have to run anymore, looking for something on the outside. If things are supposed to be, they will be. The key to happiness? Be thankful for what you already have…Here are some images from my new and yet so familiar playground. I love it being back home – back on track. And yes – I´m addicted to the Moon… Enjoy!
