Hop Field At Night

Strolling around last night to get some impressions of the current hop harvest in the Hallertau, Lower Bavaria, I came across this new built up hop plant. The poles are set up, but the cables and wires are not attached so far. That makes a great graphic silhouette against the night sky. Enjoy!

Hop Fields At Sunset

Revisiting the same place over and over again may sound a bit boring, but the possibilities it holds photographically speaking are diverse. I have spent days and nights out in the hop fields of the Hallertau, Lower Bavaria, either working there in my adolescent days or nowadays, just cruising around to see what might get my attention. No night shots this time, but the setting sun, which is only visible like that around this time of the year. Enjoy!

Back On Track

An almost 3-year long crusade of disorientation has finally came to an end. Just before X-mas 2014, I moved back to the area where I grew up, just a stones throw away from my parental home. I love traveling, but I also love being at home, doing some craft work (joiner) again and carrying for my children. I don´t have to run anymore, looking for something on the outside. If things are supposed to be, they will be. The key to happiness? Be thankful for what you already have…Here are some images from my new and yet so familiar playground. I love it being back home – back on track. And yes – I´m addicted to the Moon… Enjoy!

Hop Gardens, Nocturnal

Some impressions from my latest visit to my beloved hop gardens of the Hallertau, Lower Bavaria. These fields are just a stone´s throw away from where I used to live and to roam the streets. The structures of the poles and wires building a very graphic design against the changing colors of the night sky. During the transition from nautical twilight towards astronomical twilight, light pollution from even the smallest villages become visible. One of the very few nights of 2014, we have had a clear sky on a New Moon´s night. Until I was 17 years old, I did all of the work according to the hop gardens, myself, helping my parents on our farm. Nowadays, I just enjoy being out there at nights, photographing the hop fields and  listening to the sounds of the night, and sometimes having a chat with some curios farmers. Enjoy!

Hop Fields Of The Hallertau, Bavaria

The largest continuous hop planting area in the world is called “Hallertau”, which is derived from Old High German and means something like “a forest who hides its interior” or “wild/primeval forest”. The description ´..who hides its interior..`  also  fits well to most of the country-side residents of the Hallertau, including myself….a special breed of characters! The area is covering nearly 15 000 hectare and is part of Lower and Upper Bavaria, situated south of the Danube River and in the heart of  Bavaria, Germany, geographically seen. Growing up as a (hop)farmers kid, I know the flow of work and the amount of work involved in doing hops, but that changed a lot in the last 30 years.

These images are also a reminiscence to my “old” home; since I moved to Landshut, the capital of Lower Bavaria, one year ago, I have not been that much around at my former playgrounds. Luckily, from last Sunday on, I got three fantastic nights in a row spending out there in the fields and I enjoyed it very much. Knowing all the places, the back roads, the people and the locations where to photograph, brings back a lot of memories. The silhouettes of the empty fields make a fantastic foreground with the different light conditions. It does not always have to be the far away countries – the beauty lies in front of you! Enjoy!

My Favorite Images Of October 2012

It´s November already and  after selling my property in February (home and workshop, and finally getting the money after a six months long-lasting lawsuit), and after the death of my mother in July, things are getting back to normal, well, some sort of. The debts are paid, I got myself some new toys to play with and a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for traveling/cruising around. I´m still able to do what I like to do, with the back-up of my  fantastic wife and family, who are supporting my new “life-style” at 100%. The month of October was under the sign of my journey back into the past – to see the place where one of my uncles had fallen during WW II around Volgograd, former Stalingrad, Russia. Enjoy my favorite picks from October!
